What is themed wedding - and why?

First of all - what is themed wedding? Well - it is a wedding that is styled to represent a specific theme. The styling can include decorations, outfits, the words said in the ceremony and can be a reflection of a theme that you love. For example you might love the Elizabethan era and would like a wedding that is conducted in a Shakespearean style - with chamber music, and vows taken from a Shakespeare play - or you perhaps you want to focus on a musician, a certain culture or a genre such as sci-fi and anything else, from favourite musical or film, to super heroes or a fantasy world like Lord of the Rings

Why have themed wedding? Because they are fun, and if you two are passionate about a theme eg Vampires then it gives you an extra dimension to your day and makes it extra special.

How do I plan for a themed wedding? Firstly you can decide how much you want to commit to the theme - for example you might just want a nod to the theme, or a full blown, all out event. Whatever you choose, your planning will be very similar to planning a traditional wedding, but you need to make sure that you choose suppliers who are able and willing to commit to the theme you have set your mind on. For example if you are planning for a Harry Potter style wedding you might want to source chocolate frogs as wedding favours, and find a caterer who can serve Butterbeer for the toast, and then select a celebrant who can help you to write an unbreakable vow as part of your ceremony.

What are the pros and cons of a themed wedding? It is a fantastic opportunity for you to get really creative and to have fun and will be a truly memorable experience for you and your guests. You might need to watch out for guests who struggle with participating - for example wearing a specific costume, but if you have some flexibility about this, there is no reason why it can't be a wonderful experience for everyone. It might be costly to source all of your resources, but with some careful planning, and choosing of your suppliers, it doesn't have to be. As a long time theatrical I know that you can create an incredible effect without spending a fortune on costumes and other props. If you do your homework it can be cost effective, and it is all part of the fun of course.
